The Tomatoes are still ripening in abundance, as we also harvested lemon balm and mint to sell to fellow staff of Gateway High School.
As the heat lingers on, we took a day to help do some garden care. Sometimes, when comparing something to ourself, it becomes a little easier to understand. This week, we found the importance of dead-heading and cutting back over growth and pruning off sick leaves is comparable to brushing our teeth or cutting nails: we're keeping our hygiene up, allowing potential for a vital life.
Propagation also took place with the copious amount of Aloe that has been overflowing in a particular bed in front of our green home. In a few weeks they will be ready to be sold and sent to their new home! Make sure to come by and claim one as your own!
And a weekly activity that is always providing interesting smells, beautiful colors and sometimes super squirt filled tomatoes, is the break down of the food from the cafeteria into our composting system. Permaculture tactics always share a 'rule of thumb' when breaking down material before placing it in the compost pile. The rule of thumb refers to whether it be a branch or a moldy carrot, that it is about the length of your thumb: this allows for a speedy process to turn it back into soil to use for our expanding garden beds!
San Francisco is showing up in having it's amazing weather throughout September and October, and the Garden Club Members as well as the garden itself are thoroughly enjoying it!
