Also this week we suffered a small setback for our new cover crop. Mr. Berthiaume came in one morning to see our neighborhood pigeons feasting on the cover crop seeds we had just planted last Saturday! Luckily Aaron Watson, Principal at Gateway Middle School, and his 17 advisee students came over to work in the garden afew days later, . We had them replant the cover seed to a depth that should prevent the most intrepid of pigeons from locating the buried treasure.
This week we innoculated "Garden Giant" mushroom spawns into one of our planting beds as an experiment. We're trying to grow a nice mycellium mat in the bed to help break down the carbon mulch and contribute to soil building. If it works, we'll innoculate other parts of the garden. Thank you to the Mycological Society of San Francisco for all your guidance!
