Our final Garden Club of 2014 had us weeding the Scott St planting beds, a bit of a tedious job, but it had to be done! We also reveled in all the luxurious rain that has made our plants and fungi so happy! See you in 2015!

Tonight we added some festive holiday cheer to our garden. We dug a trench and buried some electrical cords that connected our Solar Roller, the solar panel and battery array that powers the garden. We then strung some colorful holiday lights on the garden fence and greenhouse. We learned a powerful lesson: if the Sun does not shine, the solar panes do not make electricity! All this rain is great for the Garden but its prevented the solar panel from generating electricity, and powering our lights!
This week we created a new planting bed and filled it with an artichoke, an elderberry, some carrots and some green bel peppers. Our companion plantings will flower and fruit at different times, and each type of plant will occupy different levels of vertical space in the air and soil, so they are not competing with each other for sunlight and nutrient. This is one of the fundamental principles of permaculture garden design!
