Gateway High School's Garden is a 5,000 square-foot organic garden, living laboratory and outdoor classroom in San Francisco's Western Addition neighborhood. It was built by removing 10% of the school's parking lot in 2014.

Our garden program focuses on teaching the skills of organic gardening and educating youth about the importance of eating healthy food, using resources sustainably, and creating regenerative natural systems that help keep our community and the planet healthy.

  • In the garden , we learn how to grow and care for all kinds of plants; everything from preparing the soil to harvesting the fruits, vegetables and flowers.
  • We also design and construct new parts of our garden and make our school beautiful by maintaining these green spaces for students and staff to enjoy.
  • In addition, we cook and eat what we grow! We discuss healthy eating habits, and learn how to live healthier lives.
  • When we’re not working in the garden, we take occasional trips to parks, gardens and farmer’s markets to get new ideas and experience our green city.
  • We also raise money for plants and garden equipment through donations, grants and “healthy food” sales.
  • Finally, we work in teams to accomplish our goals and help spread the word about healthy living to our school community.
