An exciting week for us! We realized we had too much lettuce that we couldn't eat it all ourselves. Our first food surplus! We quickly organized a food sale after school for the students and staff. We sold out of 15 heads of lettuce, 8 bunches of cilantro, and 8 bunches of hot and spicy oregano in just 10 minutes. What vindication for our hard work! Organic food really IS popular! Liam and Brantley spent a good hour saving some vetch and pea seeds for future cover crop plantings!

This week we began to chop and drop the vetch cover crop we planted back in January. The vetch is now overflowing with bright purple flowers, which the bumblebees absolutely love! We kept some vetch on a few areas to keep the bees happy. We then took the chopped up vetch and spread it onto the open planting beds and covered it with an inch of mulch, and watered it all good. Soil building! Hannah from SF Rec and Park stopped by to tour the garden and help us out. Thanks Hannah!
We lost our webmaster for these two months, but will be restarting our weekly blogs soon! Stay tuned! In the meantime, here are some photos of what we've been up to... |
