Also this week we suffered a small setback for our new cover crop. Mr. Berthiaume came in one morning to see our neighborhood pigeons feasting on the cover crop seeds we had just planted last Saturday! Luckily Aaron Watson, Principal at Gateway Middle School, and his 17 advisee students came over to work in the garden afew days later, . We had them replant the cover seed to a depth that should prevent the most intrepid of pigeons from locating the buried treasure.
This week we innoculated "Garden Giant" mushroom spawns into one of our planting beds as an experiment. We're trying to grow a nice mycellium mat in the bed to help break down the carbon mulch and contribute to soil building. If it works, we'll innoculate other parts of the garden. Thank you to the Mycological Society of San Francisco for all your guidance!

About 10 hardworking students, parents, and volunteers gathered this Saturday for another fun garden work day. We fixed the broken fence rails, planted some new cover crops, and worked on some squash plants that were developing a leaf mold. Best of all we planted our first Meyer lemon tree. Thank you to Aaron and Yulia White, both Gateway alums who donated the tree and planted it with their son in honor of their wedding anniversary. Thank you to everyone that came out!.
Our newest volunteer member of Garden Club showed up again this week! A red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) has been perched on the fence, monitoring our garden for tasty mice that might set up shop next to our compost pile. Add her to our Organic Integrated Pest Management System! Alexis harvested about 60 snails of all sizes from one part of the garden that was getting eaten up pretty good. She moved them to a neighboorhood park where they might find a happy home. We also worked to get rid of a little mold that showed up on our mushrooms. We're experimenting with the right level of moisture and light that will grow fabulous porcinin, oyster, and shitake mushrooms. Stay tuned!
This week we celebrated our hard work with a garden BBQ including organic chicken made with a rosemary/thyme dry rub from our garden, roasted red peppers, some cukes we harvested, and veggie burgers. Mr. Berthiaume's AP Environmental Science class was also in the garden this week learning how our school composting system works and getting their hands dirty!
