Our first week has us getting to know the garden with a little scavenger hunt, garden tour, and mapping exercise. Then it was time to harvest our first apples of the season! After just three years our apples trees are sporting some lovely fruit. Next week well deliver some to our favorite teachers, ya know, to show our appreciation for all they do.
School is finally back in session and we've got a wonderful crop (ahem) of 18 students ready and eager to learn about gardening. What could be better than having a high school class that meets outside in a beautiful garden, learning about sustainability, and has no homework!

Last week a group of first and second graders from the Jewish Community Center's "Urban Gardening" program visited our garden for a tour, and then helped us out by weeding the old section of the garden, spreading wood chips, picking up trash, and planting beans. 12th grader Santiago Delgado and Mr. Berthiaume led the group of excited kids on behalf of Gateway High. Great job everyone! We hope to see some of you attend Gateway when you get older. Imagine what the garden will look like then! Below are some photos from the day.
Greetings from the garden! I hope everyone has had a relaxing but rewarding summer! We've been busy getting the garden ready for the return of students, and we're so excited at the improvements we've made. Here's a quick list of what we got accomplished over what turned out to be a very sunny summer:
-Replaced the failing shade structure with a brand-new, heavy duty, wind-resistant shade structure, with a rain fly for the wet winter months. -Installed a new large tool shed that is very secure and will keep our tools safe and clean. -Cleaned out the greenhouse and waterproofed the tables. -Spread new wood chips on all walkways are gathering areas and spread compost on planting beds. -Fixed all irrigation leaks and adjusted watering schedules. -Built a new lumber rack (from recycled lumber) to keep all lumber organized and off the ground. I'll be teaching the Gardening class this year, and I know it's going to be a really fun and productive year in the garden. Keep checking this page to keep up to date on all the progress. We'll be posting community hours soon, so come by for a tour! |
